Railing posts are the part that fails. A post lag-screwed to the outside of a rim joist has very little resisting a person leaning on it, and proper attachment — blocking, through-bolts or a purpose-made hardware system — is what makes a guard actually guard.
Baluster spacing and guard height are code items and they are checked at inspection for a reason. On older decks the spacing is frequently wide enough for a small child to pass through, which is worth correcting whether or not anything else needs doing.

What are the code requirements for deck railings and stairs?
A guard at least 36 inches high on any deck more than 30 inches off the ground, with balusters spaced so a four-inch ball cannot pass, and stairs with consistent risers and a graspable handrail. These are the things an inspector measures and the things that keep a child on the deck. Cable rail meets them when tensioned properly.
What railing looks best and lasts longest?
Aluminum for low maintenance and clean lines; cable for a view; composite to match composite decking. Wood rail is the cheapest and the first thing on a deck to weather, because the top rail takes sun and water all day. Rails are the part people touch and look at, and they are where a modest upgrade shows most.
