Adding a roof over an existing patio is a structural project, not a cosmetic one. The posts need footings, the connection to the house needs flashing, and the slab has to be able to take the post loads — which a patio slab poured without footings frequently cannot.
A pergola and a solid roof are different products for different problems. A pergola breaks up afternoon sun and looks good; it does not keep you dry. If the aim is to use the space in a Tennessee summer thunderstorm, it needs a roof.

Footings, permits and other covered patios & pergolas questions
Should a patio cover attach to the house or stand alone?
Attach it if the roofline allows a clean tie-in — it looks like part of the house and the framing is simpler. Stand it alone if the house wall has a window, a second story or a roof pitch that makes attaching awkward. Attached covers need flashing into the house wall done properly, or they leak at the join.
Pergola or solid roof?
A pergola gives filtered shade and looks lighter; a solid or insulated roof gives real shade and keeps rain off, which in a Tennessee summer is the difference between a patio you use and one you look at. Louvered roofs do both at a price. The choice is how you want to use the space, not just how it looks.
